DWI Victim Pushes For Tougher DWI Penalties
The day that Texas Lawmakers were holding hearings concerning DWI checkpoints and mandatory interlocks for first-time offenders, a DWI victim was advocating for tougher punishment for DWI offenders. Whereas a Texas bill would allow for first-time offenders to receive deferred adjudication for their offense, he was advocating for automatic jail time.
Here is the video of the accident and it is shocking.
As you can see, this is an offense that can have severe consequences. In this case, one person was killed while another remains in a wheelchair several years later. The defendant in this case had an alcohol level twice the legal limit, but did not have any prior DWI convictions. She was charged with
intoxication manslaughter and
intoxication assault. She was sentenced to sixteen years in prison.
