Blood Alcohol Continued.
As we noted yesterday, alcohol will travel down the esophagus and will enter the stomach. Most of it will travel then to the small intestine, however, approximatly 25% of the alcohol will be absorbed from the stomach into the blood stream. The rest of the alcohol will be absorbed into the blood stream through the small intestine.
This is what science knows for sure. What scientists do not know is what affect absorption variables have on overall alcohol absorption. Factors such as gender, body composiiton, liver functioning, amount of food that has been consumed, and even ethnicity will all affect the rate of absorption of the alcohol into the blood stream.
How much food a person has consumed is a very important factor when considering alcohol absorption. Even though scientists know that food affects alcohol absorption the time frame can vary widely. For example, there are studies that show that the alcohol consumed on an empty stomach might be absorded almost immediately to over three hours. It is an even wider range-up to three hours--if a person has consumed a large amount of food before consuming alcohol.
