The Third Test: The One Leg Stand Test
Obviously, the name of this test speaks for itself. The test requires the suspect to stand on one leg throughout the administration of the test.
Another obvious point, while one leg is holding the suspect up, the other leg will be extended in front of the suspect. The suspect will hold the other leg out stiffly or straight out, while the suspect holds his or her foot six inches above the ground.
While the suspect is holding the foot out above the ground, he or she is required to stare at his or her foot and count out loud to thirty. Generally, the police officer tells the suspect to count "one thousand and one, one thousand and two, one thousand and three, one thousand and four, . . . ."
The reason for this test is to determine a person's ability to stand still, without swaying, while counting and holding his or her foot above the ground. The reason for this is to determine if a person has alcohol in his system that affects his divided attention.
