The Walk and Turn Test Continued
The Walk and Turn test, the first of the two divided attention tests, consists of the suspect standing in the heel-to-toe fashion with arms at his or her sides while the instructions are being given. At this point, the officer will give the instructions, but he is also looking to see if there is any swaying while a person stands in that position.
The officer will then explain that the suspect is to take nine heel-to-toe steps along a line (generally, it is an imaginary line as we hope that the officer is not using the white line on the side of the road). After taking nine steps, the suspect is to turn around as demonstrated by the officer and then return in the same fashion--nine heel-to-toe steps. The suspect must count the steps aloud and have his or her hands down by his or her side.
