What Is An SR-22? Continued.
An SR-22 is a form that is considered to be a "certificate of insurance" that shows to the Department of Public Safety that the driver has insurance for the future. SR-22 insurance is mandatory for two years and must be on file with the Department of Public Safety. The two years requirement is from the date of conviction.
WIth an SR-22, the insurance company that issued the form is certifying to the Department of Public Safety that the driver does indeed have insurance coverage. Importantly, once the SR-22 insurance coverage is cancelled, terminated or lasped the insurance company is required by law to report this to the Department of Public Safety.
If the Department is notified that the SR-22 policy is cancelled, terminated, or lapses and the insurance is required to be valid, then the person's driving privilege and vehicle registration may be suspended.
