Texas DWI Memorial Markers to Come Down after Two Years

In Mesquite, Texas, news sources say that the family of a DWI accident victim now have a road sign displayed in their living room. The Texas Department of Transportation recently returned the sign to the family that had purchased it to commemorate the death of their daughter, R.B. The family bought the sign for $300 dollars after R.B. was killed in May of 2003 by a drunk driver. She was 16-years-old when she died. Following her death, the family asked Texas State Legislature to allow those who have lost their loved ones to drunk driving accidents to be allowed to purchase road signs that would be positioned along the state's highways. The signs were to be placed as memorials in the spots where victims lost their lives.

While the initiative was passed by the Texas State Legislature, signs have a limit of two years. This means that after two years have passed, the signs get taken down and returned to the families that bought them to honor their deceased loved ones. R.B.'s family had their sign returned to them and they are now wondering why signs can't be permanent. They hope to appeal to legislators to lift the two year limit in the near future. To date, there are 125 memorial markers along interstates in Texas.
