This week in San Antonio, Texas, a prosecutor asked jurors during a DWI trial to convict a drunk driver because she had caused the death of a police officer. The defendant, 59-year-old S.B., was facing life imprisonment for her crimes. However, the jury decided not to impose the life in prison sentence. Instead, they opted for 45 years of jail time. The jury determined that the vehicle she was driving was used as a deadly weapon which means that S.B. will have to serve at least half of her sentence before she can apply for parole. This means that she will not be eligible for such an application until she is 81 years of age.
News sources say that it took the jurors 4.5 hours to reach their decision. S.B. was placed under arrest in October of 2010 after she ran into a truck. Ten feet away from the other vehicle was S.A., a 25-year-old police officer, who was hit by S.B.'s vehicle and slammed into a nearby guardrail. Due to the impact of the car, the officer was nearly torn in half according to witness statements. He lost his life two weeks after the DWI accident. S.B. was later charged with manslaughter of a public servant and officers say that at the time of her arrest her
blood alcohol level was .14%, well above the state's legal limit of 0.08%. If you were recently arrested for DWI with a high blood alcohol level, it is important that you discuss your case with a
